Experience the history and splendor of Gilded Age Washington at Anderson House, a 1905 Beaux Arts mansion built as the winter home of Larz Anderson, an American diplomat, and his wife, Isabel. Designed by the Boston firm of Arthur Little & Herbert Browne, the house was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1996.
The Andersons built their Washington home primarily for entertaining. From 1905 to 1937, they hosted diplomatic and inaugural receptions, formal dinners and luncheons, and concerts. The Andersons' guest lists included the most prominent statesmen and intellectuals from the United States and abroad, including William H. Taft, Calvin Coolidge, and Winston Churchill. Anderson House is furnished with art and artifacts gathered by Larz and Isabel during numerous trips around the world, including English paintings, French furniture, Flemish tapestries, and a collection of Asian ivories, lacquerware, screens, and sculptures.
When Larz Anderson died in 1937 with no children, his widow oversaw the gift of Anderson House and much of its original furnishings to The Society of the Cincinnati, a patriotic organization of which Larz had been a devoted member. Founded in 1783 by George Washington and other officers of the Continental Army, the Society is now a non-profit historical organization devoted to preserving the memory of the American Revolution. Anderson House offers guided tours, a changing exhibition gallery, a research library, and public programs.

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is the largest Roman Catholic church in the United States and North America, and is one of the ten largest churches in the world.
Designated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops as a National Sanctuary of Prayer and Pilgrimage, the Basilica is the nation's preeminent Marian shrine, dedicated to the patroness of the United States—the Blessed Virgin Mary under her title of the Immaculate Conception. It is oftentimes affectionately referred to as America's Catholic Church.
Visited by Pope Benedict XVI, Pope John Paul II, and Mother Teresa, among others, the Basilica, though distinctly American, rivals the great sanctuaries of Europe and the world.
Byzantine-Romanesque in style, its massive, one-of-a-kind superstructure is home to over 70 chapels and oratories that relate to the peoples, cultures and traditions that are the fabric of the Catholic faith and the mosaic of our great nation. The Basilica also houses the largest collection of contemporary ecclesiastical art on earth.
Open 365 days a year, the Basilica is host to nearly one million visitors annually, attracting pilgrims and tourists alike from across the country and around the world.
The Basilica offers six Masses and five hours of Confessions daily, as well as Guided Tours, a Catholic Gift Shop, a Catholic Book Store, and a Cafeteria to accommodate its visitors.
All are welcome.

The Knights of Columbus have established a shrine to Blessed Pope John Paul II, who served as Pope for 27 years. True to John Paul II's vision, the Knights are building the Shrine as a national center for the New Evangelization, inspired by John Paul II's life and his tireless outreach to people of all ages and faiths. The Shrine, which is currently under renovation, will offer pilgrims and visitors the opportunity to venerate a saint of our time while also discovering more about themselves. In addition to the Shrine, the preliminary plans for the site include exhibits on the life and legacy of Blessed John Paul II and on the Catholic heritage of North America. During the present period of renovation and design, the Shrine will be open with temporary exhibits and limited introductory exhibits. An interim exhibit, Be Not Afraid, is currently on display. The collection consists of hundreds of items, including many of Karol Wojtya's personal effects, works of art and photographs. The Shrine is about a mile from the Brookland-CUA Metro and a visit can easily be combined with a visit to the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Admission is free. Please check the website for updated hours and exhibit details, and call to schedule a tour.

Explore the technology and science behind fighting and solving crimes, discover the heroes of law enforcement, and venture into the dark side of the criminal mind through this intensely interactive experience. Crime Museum, located in downtown Washington, D.C., includes a crime scene lab, the filming studios for Americas Most Wanted with host John Walsh, and a retail store called - The Cop Shop. Described by Good Morning America as a must see for CSI fans, the new museum also includes high-speed police-chase simulators, a simulated FBI shooting range, John Dillingers car, and hundreds of interactives and artifacts.
Once visitors pass through a medieval dungeon portal, the history of crime and punishment in America unfolds beginning with colonial times. The cast of disreputable characters includes pirates, Wild West outlaws, gangsters, the Mob, and white collar criminals in pursuit of identity theft. An alley crime scene leads straight into a police station where visitors are booked and fingerprinted. The punishment gallery includes celebrity mug shots, a lie detector test, police line-up, and a re-creation of Al Capones jail cell.
The crime fighting gallery celebrates the courage of all members of law enforcement. An entire level of the museum is devoted to the CSI experience, where visitors come across the scene of a violent crime and utilize forensic science techniques to solve the case, from blood analysis to ballistics.

Go on an adventure you will never forget!
Double Key Treasure Hunts creates all-inclusive treasure hunt packages that use antique items from the mid-1800's to the early 1900's.
Your adventure begins when your treasure hunters open an old burlap bag that contains your Double Key Treasure Hunt kit.
Inside they'll discover some very old pieces of American history such as:
a photograph of your Double Key Treasure Hunt Society member
- a real newspaper from the mid-eighteen hundreds
- a canceled bond certificate that is over a hundred years old
- an envelope sealed with red wax
- and much more.
Inside the envelope will be an old letter from your Double Key Treasure Hunt society member, inviting you to go on an honest-to-goodness, real treasure hunt.
This letter will have a series of fun clues your hunters must solve. Some clues will be solved using the contents of the kit. Other clues will be solved by visiting locations in Washington DC. All of a sudden, a trip to a Smithsonian Museum takes on a new level of fun as your treasure hunters search for the answers to your clues.
After you solve the clues, you'll use those answers to decode a hidden message that explains where a real treasure is hidden just for you.
Whether you're five or eighty-five, treasure hunters of all ages love our hunts. Take a step back in time and enjoy an adventure you'll never forget.
Please visit our website to view a video that will give you complete details.

Circa 1800, The Dumbarton House is a premiere example of Federal period architecture that features 18th- and 19th-century furniture and decorative arts (paintings, textiles, silver, and ceramics) made and used during the Republic's formative years. The Federal government and its many civil servants moved to Washington in 1800, and it was the family of Joseph Nourse, America's First Civil Servant (as the first Register of the U.S. Treasury), that lived in the home 1804-1814. The next resident, Charles Carroll, harbored the "President's Lady," Dolley Madison, in August 1814 fleeing from the burning White House and invading British troops. Since 1932, Dumbarton House has been the headquarters of The National Society of Colonial Dames of America, a patriotic non-profit organization founded in 1891 to collect and preserve objects of significant historical interest and to educate citizens about them.
Dumbarton House is accredited by the American Association of Museums, and hosts a regular schedule of programs including special exhibitions and tours, free concerts, lectures, tastings, school and scout programs, cotillion classes, and summer camps. Tours Tue-Sun, 11 am-3 pm (last entry 2:45 pm). Check the website for updates.
Admission: Adults/Seniors $5.00; children, youth, and students-with-ID are always free.

The German-American Heritage Museum is the only national museum to celebrate, display, and commend the achievements of immigrants who came from German-speaking countries and achieved the American dream. It traces their progress with a timeline, which runs the full length of the exhibition hall. This timeline represents the 400-year presence of German-speakers, who came to America, starting in the 1600s. As one enters the museum, the stairs featuring the names and faces of famous German-Americans welcomes museum visitors and beckons them to venture upward, to the second floor where they will see a number of panels, pointing out the various dates in American history in which German-Americans have had an immense influence. The museum also houses relics from immigrant families with existing ties to their German heritage. You will be surprised when you see these artifacts and the 350lb. bust of Haendel as you round the corner. The museum designates an entire wall to families with a long line of German history, as well as German clubs, still active in the US. It is because of these paneled groups and families, and the hard work and dedication of the German-American Heritage Foundation and its members, that this museum, after years of diligence and determination was able to go from a mere pipe-dream to a center devoted to the cause of promoting and educating the public about German-Americans and their history. This museum is truly something to behold.

Scheduled to open in 2013, the National Children's Museum (NCM) will be a world-class cultural and educational center dedicated to engaging children and empowering them to make a difference. The mission of NCM is to inspire children to care about and improve the world. Through its interactive exhibits, online community (www.ncm.museum), and unique national programs and partnerships, NCM is transforming the concept of a traditional museum by becoming a catalyst and forum for a national movement to inspire and empower kids to speak up, take action, and get engaged in their communities. Through 2013, NCM is operating as a Museum Without Walls, participating in a variety of community events and working with other arts and cultural organizations to develop creative partnerships that benefit kids and families. In the spring of 2009, NCM opened the Launch Zone, a 2,700 square-foot space at National Harbor where kids and families can prototype and test exhibit and program concepts and provide their feedback about what should be included in the new Museum. The Launch Zone is free and open to the public 7 days a week. Visit www.ncm.museum for more information.

The National Firearms Museum proudly exhibits 2,700 guns spanning over six centuries, presenting America's most significant firearms ranging from a wheellock that came over on the Mayflower to a NYPD Officer's revolver recovered from the ashes of the World Trade Center. Inside the fifteen galleries are guns owned by presidents and kings, lawmen and outlaws, gold medal Olympic shooters and everyday hobbyists.
Featured exhibits include the Robert E. Petersen Gallery, called "the most amazing room of firearms on display anywhere" and features masterpieces of the engraver's art on the finest guns ever made. The popular Hollywood Guns exhibit presents the actual guns used in movies, from John Wayne's first sixgun through Dirty Harry's .44 Magnum to firearms from the latest Academy Award winners, even Luke Skywalker's lightsaber! An exhibit of Theodore Roosevelt's firearms and personal effects on loan from Sagamore Hill is the latest addition to the museum.
The National Firearms Museum's goal is to conserve our nation's firearms treasures, and to tell the story of Americans and their gun to this and future generations. The museum offers a glimpse into the firearms that built our nation, helped forge our freedom, and captured our imagination. Whether uncovered here at the museum or just beyond our walls, each gun has its own tale just waiting to be discovered.
Visit the museum's website for more information, www.nramuseum.com. Open daily 9:30am to 5pm. Free Admission.

Encounter superb works of modern art in an intimate setting at The Phillips Collection, an internationally recognized museum in Washington's vibrant Dupont Circle neighborhood.
Paintings by Renoir and Rothko, Bonnard and O'Keeffe, van Gogh and Diebenkorn are among the many stunning impressionist and modern works that fill the museum's distinctive building, which combines extensive new galleries with the family home of its founder, Duncan Phillips. The collection continues to develop with selective new acquisitions, many by contemporary artists.
Special exhibitions and frequent changes in the arrangement of the permanent collection mean that there's something new on every visit to the Phillips. The museum's Center for the Study of Modern Art offers stimulating Conversations with Artists, symposia, lectures, and more, while Sunday Concerts, Phillips after 5 programs, and other events provide additional food for thought. The museum also produces a vigorous, award-winning program of educational outreach that serves more than 6,000 students and teachers a year and indirectly reaches many tens of thousands more.

Located just two blocks south of the National Mall at the base of Capitol Hill, The Washington Design Center is home to several floors of luxury home furnishings with artisanal quality and craftsmanship that is unequaled in the retail environment. The best part about shopping the WDC is that you can choose a sofa in one showroom and go upstairs to select upholstery fabric from another. If you like a lamp in yet another showroom, you can bring it down and hold next to the sofa to make sure it's the right choice. The showroom managers are like family at the WDC -- they help each other to help their customers.
Though the WDC is "to the trade," visitors who are not already using an interior designer can take advantage of our Entree buying service to browse and shop more than 50 showrooms with custom furnishings, fabric, floor coverings, wall covering and accessories. The service offers a free one-hour consultation with our Entree representative, who can assist with purchases, review floor plans, discuss color questions, or help brainstorm solutions to design or space-planning challenges. For those who want further assistance, the WDC offers a huge portfolio of the region's best designers to chose from through the "Find A Designer" section on our web site, dcdesigncenter.com

Standing at one of the city's highest points, this soaring Gothic cathedral extends almost the length of two football fields and pierces the city's skyline.
The church's grandeur is evidenced in its stunning features: soaring vaulting, sparkling stained glass windows, and intricate carvings. The Space Window contains a piece of lunar rock presented to the cathedral by the astronauts of Apollo XI. Fanciful gargoyles and dramatic sculpture adorn the exterior.
Although a Christian church, the Cathedral welcomes persons of all faiths and is frequently the site of interfaith and ecumenical services. Services of celebration for the swearing in of a president, thanksgiving for the release of hostages, and mourning for the death of a leader are examples of the Cathedral's "national purpose."
The Cathedral offers programs on spirituality, occasional special exhibits, specialty tours, lectures, monthly labyrinth, organ demonstrations, and musical events. Highlights tours are offered daily. Groups must have reservations.
The Bishop's Garden, on the Cathedral grounds, is a medieval-styled walled garden with ancient boxwoods, herbs, and a rose garden
